Root Canal Treatment

We believe that all dentistry can be a comfortable and positive experience. Our Gallup Dental Group team looks forward to exceeding your expectations, especially if a problem arises.

Root canal treatment does not have to be painful! Our gentle and skilled dentists use the latest techniques and thoroughly numb your tooth before getting started. We are here to take the anxiety out of your root canal treatment. Having a root canal can help you avoid a dental extraction.

When You Need Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy becomes necessary when an infection spreads to the nerve of your tooth. The symptoms can feel quite painful and include swelling, sensitivity, and the feeling of pressure, especially when you chew. Pain may worsen when you lie down due to inflammation. A root canal will relieve these symptoms and allow your tooth to heal.

We perform most root canal treatment in our office, but if we feel you would be better served by a visit to the endodontist, we will recommend someone we trust and follow your care closely.

What to Expect with Root Canal Treatment

After completely numbing your tooth, Dr. Rowberry or Dr. Vergien will make a small access point in the chewing surface of your tooth. We will then clean out any diseased tissue and bacteria from inside your tooth. Your dentist will then place medication to help your tooth heal quickly and keep any infection at bay.

Your dentist will seal each affected canal of your tooth with a rubbery substance to fill the space and keep out bacteria.

He will fill your tooth with a temporary filling while it heals. This process can take a week or two. You may experience some slight sensitivity after treatment until the swelling and other symptoms subside. You should gradually feel better each day until you feel like yourself again.

Post-Root Canal Treatment

We will also place a permanent restoration to protect your tooth. This is a necessary step, as root canal teeth become brittle and susceptible to fracture after a root canal.

In most cases, a dental crown will provide the most reliable support and increase the longevity of your tooth. A root canal and crown can extend the life of your tooth by years, or even decades.
